For the first time in history Hip Hop/ R&B dominates as the most consumed genre of music in the United States. Nielsen released its music mid year report and it clearly states Elvis's time has come and gone, as this genre is steadily declining annually. As of now Hip Hop accounts for over 25.1% of all music consumed in the US while Rock N Roll comes in second at 23%. According to Forbes, fans have become more familiar with streaming services like Apple Music & Spotify and this is the reason for hip hop ranking higher.
As far as traditional album sales Rock is still number 1 with over 40% of sales. While Rock fans still purchase more physical CD's than any other genre this number is not representative of how Americana are truly consuming music.
When it comes to streaming, Hip Hop is the most preferred with over 29% of all streams. This number is even more shocking, at the time of this Forbes article, 7 out of top 10 songs on streaming are Hip Hop.
